We want to update you on the situation in North Vietnam and especially Hanoi regarding flooding after all the international news reports from last weekend:
 
- The situation has improved over the week-end as the torrential rains have eased and the water level is receding. The worst situation was on the night of Friday 31 Oct through to Sat 1st Nov 08
- Some parts of Hanoi remain flooded but the main tourist sites are accessible although with some detours and longer driving times remain.
- All hotels are open and functioning normally
- Some roads leading out of Hanoi are blocked (see below) but access to the airport is open and was never interrupted
- The road to Hoa Lu was interrupted and a secondary road had to be used. The boat trip in Tam Coc was open to 2 caves instead of 3
- The road to Halong Bay was not interrupted and cruises operated as normal
- Although access to the train station was difficult, all trains are now running as normal after a 1 night stop for trains going south to Hue. Trains to Sapa operate as normal
 
Recommendations (as per today Monday 2 Nov 08)
-Avoid trips to Hoa Lu for now
-No trips to the Perfume Pagoda
-No trips to Hoa Binh/ Mai chau
-No trips to But Thap Pagoda
-No trips to Ha Tay province (Thay/Tay Phuong)
-No trips to Dong Ho.
 
To recap: for the next 2-3 days the weather will not be ideal and visits of Hanoi will be affected to a certain degree, BUT as long as the same heavy rains do not resume, we see no reason at the moment to change any travel plans and to avoid Hanoi.
Our guides will adapt programs and itineraries of our clients after proposing alternatives and options when needed and after discussion with clients.
Please note that hotels will currently not waive any cancellation fees and will charge rooms booked in full, so a re-orientation of a trip will incur extra expenses.

Urlauber verzichten gern auf Politik
„Die jüngsten Unruhen haben bei unseren Gästen auch gar kein besonderes Erstaunen ausgelöst“, kommentiert der Besitzer eines Fünf-Sterne-Resorts im Süden von Phuket. „Die politische Lage in Thailand hat Touristen bisher eigentlich noch nie sonderlich interessiert – solange sie sich sicher fühlten“. Dies hätte sich nur einmal für kurze Zeit geändert, als der Flughafen der beliebten Urlauberinsel wegen einer Blockade auf der politischen Landkarte aufgetaucht sei.

Und wer sich ein bisschen mit der politischen Situation dieses Reiseziels befasse, so der Hotelier, würde schnell verstehen, dass zur Entwicklung einer so jungen Demokratie eben auch mal harte Auseinandersetzungen gehören. Dennoch sei die Sorge um die bevorstehende Hochsaison groß. „Nicht nur wegen der Negativ-Schlagzeilen, sondern vor allem auch wegen der weltweiten Wirtschaftskrise und der Verteuerung der Flugpreise“.

Keine Gefährdungslage für Touristen
Das thailändische Fremdenverkehrsamt in Frankfurt versucht, gegen das von den Medien erzeugte Stimmungsbild anzukämpfen – und vermeldet mit Vehemenz „keine Gefährdungslage“ im Fremdenverkehr. „Für Touristen besteht weiterhin keine Gefahr oder Einschränkung in Bangkok“, bekräftigt Direktorin Suwalai Pinpradab. „Nur wenige Teile der Stadt sind direkt von den Demonstrationen betroffen, und alle touristischen Attraktionen können nach wie vor uneingeschränkt besichtigt werden.“

Vor Ort bemühte sich Tourismus- und Sportminister Weerasak gegenzusteuern: Vor rund 1.100 ausländischen Medienvertretern und Mitarbeitern von Reiseagenturen versicherte er, dass sich derartige Straßenschlachten wie die am 7. Oktober nicht wiederholen würden, obwohl der Konflikt sicherlich weitergehe. Diese haben nach der Aufhebung des Ausnahmezustands Mitte September nun freilich alle Hoffnungen zerstört, dass die Sicherheitshinweise für Thailand weltweit entschärft werden könnten. Erste offizielle Prognosen beziffern den Einnahmeverlust des Fremdenverkehrs für das letzte Quartal auf mindestens 200 Millionen Euro.

Beten für ein Ende des Konflikts
Auch der Präsident des Tourismusverbandes von Thailand brachte seine Sorge auf den Punkt. „Ich kann nur beten, dass die Situation bald besser wird“, meint Apichart Sankary. Wenn jemand das Land liebt, dann sollte er die Gewalttätigkeiten sofort beenden.“ Bis es vielleicht einmal so weit sein könnte, wird vom Auswärtigen Amt weiterhin „dringend empfohlen“, Demonstrationen und sonstige größere Menschenansammlungen zu meiden, auch um sich nicht dem Risiko eventueller Sprengstoffanschläge auszusetzen.

Da die Besetzung des Regierungssitzes (”Government” House) durch die außerparlamentarische Opposition und damit verbundene Demonstrationen weitergehen, wird auch weiterhin dazu geraten, das Regierungsviertel im Herzen der Stadt, besonders das Gebiet um das Government House (Pitsanulok Road), die Rajdamnoen Avenue, die Makkhawan Bridge zu meiden und aufgrund der aktuellen Ereignisse auch das Areal um das Parlament zu meiden.

Wenn Sicherheitshinweise mit Reisewarnungen verwechselt werden

Although there is still political tension there is no visible threat of violence and there were no confrontations last night. The Thai army has announced they will not be using force and it appears that demonstrations will continue for the next few days at least, but they are likely to be peaceful. The main political opponents now appear to be in a more productive dialogue and we hopeful that some kind of resolution is in sight.

Away from government house, Bangkok is quiet and peaceful with no signs of any trouble and the vast majority of Thai people are going about their business as normal. Protests in Bangkok or not uncommon however they are usually carried out in a peaceful and often friendly atmosphere. 
Our Office is operating all tours as usual throughout Thailand without any interruption. It is our feeling that the fighting two nights ago was an isolated incident and is not very likely to recur.
 

All tourist sites including the Grand Palace are open as usual and we are still in constant contact with our guides and clients. We are not taking tourists anywhere near government house or the areas where demonstrations have been taking place. All airports are open and there are currently no open threats of disruption to transportation services apart from some train strikes.
 

We are concerned that the international media is making the situation in Bangkok look far more serious than it appears here on the ground and we are continuing to urge all partners to ask guests to wait and see how the situation develops over the next few days before considering altering their travel plans to Thailand. So far no guests have asked to leave the country and no in country clients have altered their travel plans.
Life away from government house is going on very much as normal.
